I call Rome “the Beast” because the early church described the Roman Empire that way—as “the Beast and the Prostitute.” In the X-rated language of the Bible, the risen Lord gives John a vision of “the great Prostitute” with whom “the kings of the earth committed adultery” and by whom “the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries” (Rev. 17:1–2).
